Tips to Prevent Wind Damage
It has been a record year for tornadoes in the United States. The death toll in May had risen to 60% above the national average for the previous three years. Ninety-eight people were killed by tornadoes through May 11.
As if tornadoes weren’t enough, June 1 marks the official start of the 2008 hurricane season. During an average hurricane season, there are eleven named storms, including six hurricanes. Out of these six hurricanes, two will reach major status.
For the 2008 hurricane season the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted a 65% chance that we will see an above-normal season. An above-normal season consists of 16 named storms, 2-to-9 hurricanes, and 2-to-5 major hurricanes. A major hurricane is classified as a Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. While only a handful of authorities may be directly affected by a tornado or hurricane, several will suffer property losses due to severe weather and high winds.
The following are a few tips to help prevent property damage from severe wind:
1. Identify problem areas outside the building
2. Inspect shingle tabs on roofs
3. Inspect roof sheathing on pitched roofs
4. Buy Hurricane Tie-Down Kits
5. Brace garage doors
6. Maintain trees
7. Store outdoor objects
8. Maintain backup power
