Copper Craving Wreaks Havoc on PHAs
A number of agencies have experienced vandalism to vacant units due to the value of copper. Vandals break in to steal wire, piping, and air conditioning units to get the copper as its value has soared in recent years.
Housing agencies are not the only ones experiencing the problem. Utility companies, construction firms, and water companies have all been on the receiving end of stolen copper tools, materials, or equipment.
Here are a few tips to prevent copper vandalism:
- Secure basements and crawl space openings;
- Secure vacant buildings with locks, extra lighting, and guards;
- Post no trespassing and police patrol signs; and
- Make the building appear to be occupied by keeping lights on at all times.
Some states have passed laws to require identification at the time copper is turned in at a scrap yard. In addition, some proof of a source may be required. |
